Weight Loss Medications and link with HRT/Contraceptive Pill

In light of recent media coverage around privately issued weight loss injections, we have updated our website with some important information – please see below if this applies to you.

For women under age 55 years prescribed weight loss injections privately including Mounjaro, Ozempic, Wegovy, Rybelsus, Saxenda, Victoza, Diavic, Trulicity, Suliqua or Bydureon BCise

Please see the information link below regarding these medications and the impact on ORAL contraceptive pills.  This DOES NOT appear to affect long acting contraceptive methods such as the coil (IUD), implant or injection.

For women using HRT and prescribed weight loss injections privately including Mounjaro, Ozempic, Wegovy, Rybelsus, Saxenda, Victoza, Diavic, Trulicity, Suliqua or Bydureon BCise

There is now evidence that these medications may have an impact on the effectiveness of your HRT adequately protecting the lining of your womb (endometrium).   If you are taking any form of ORAL HRT (combined HRT pill, oral Provera or Utrogestan) please contact the practice for a routine review so we can discuss potential alternatives.  This DOES NOT appear to affect HRT in transdermal format (i.e. patch, gel or spray).

NHS Prescribing and Advice Requests

We have received a high volume of queries regarding prescribing of weight loss injections such as Wegovy and Mounjaro following the published approval by National Institute for Clinical Excellence and Scottish Medicines Consortium. However, the funding for this has not yet been agreed either centrally by Scottish Government or locally by any Health Board in Scotland and therefore GPs are not in a position to prescribe these medications.

We are also not in a position to provide specific advice or counsel patients regarding the safety or appropriateness of these injections prescribed in the private sector. However, we can give general medical advice regarding weight loss, diet and lifestyle and refer to NHS Lothian Weight Management services. If you wish for this please make a routine GP appointment.

We have also been advised by NHS Lothian against referring to the Lothian Weight Management Service specifically for weight loss injections at this time. We will update this section once we have received approved guidance regarding this.
